MV couplings and terminations are not just cable line components. This is the point where electrical energy ceases to be potential and becomes reliable current. We have seen how an incorrectly selected 10 kV termination caused a breakdown after 47 days of operation in the northern region - not due to defects, but due to ignoring the temperature cycle of −45...+40°C. That is why the selection, installation and operation of MV couplings and terminations require not a formulaic approach, but engineering thinking.
The first is voltage and cable type. Cold shrink series couplingsHISTEfor 1 kV (for example, models HST-CF-1KV) work only with PVC and XLPE insulation. But if the cable has aluminum armor or steel tape, additional protection against corrosion and mechanical damage is required. The second is climate. At temperatures below −25°C, heat-shrinkable sleeves require preheating to +10°C. Cold-shrinkable - no. The third is installation conditions. At an altitude of 800 m above sea level, the dielectric strength of the air decreases: in this case, even standard 10 kV couplings may require an increased air gap or a sealed design.
Customers often ask: “Why is the universal coupling not suitable?” The answer is simple - because there is no universal load. We had a case: a coupling that worked perfectly in a greenhouse in the Krasnodar region failed in the African desert due to dust penetrating the seal. A simple solution is a modification with a reinforced silicone seal and IP68. Such adaptations are possible - but only if real conditions are taken into account, and not the catalogue.
At facilities in Belarus and Kazakhstan, we recorded up to 62% of all emergency shutdowns due to poor-quality grounding of terminations. This is not an installer's mistake - it is a lack of technical support at the design stage.
No need to wait for an accident. Three steps are enough:
Under variable load conditions (for example, in rural networks with seasonal consumption growth), these parameters provide early warning. We have implemented such a system at 17 substations in Armenia - the average service life of the couplings has increased from 8 to 14 years.
This is not a marketing formulation - but the result of laboratory work, where each coupling is tested at 1000 kV, pulse discharge and cyclic load from −60 to +85°C. The company doesn't just sell products. She providestechnical continuity: from calculating electric fields in the termination zone to selecting tools for a specific type of cable. We have 7 PhDs who participate in every project - not as consultants, but as team members. And 256 engineers who know how to install in snowfall, with winds of 20 m/s or in conditions of limited access.
MV couplings and terminations are not consumables. This is an element of energy sustainability. The choice here is not a matter of price. This is a decision about how many times a year a substation will be shut down, how quickly power will be restored to a hospital or school, and how long a cable line will last without major repairs. Reliability does not start with a certificate - it starts with understanding what is happening inside the coupling at the moment of commutation.
